Artist Feature Review: ChrisB Turns Love, Ambition and Resilience Into Music, Writing and Producing His First Three Singles
Christopher Benson discusses the creative beginnings of The Right Time, Money's Calling You and Diamond in the Rough, from growing confidence in his craft to writing with someone he loves in mind.
A song can begin with a technical breakthrough, a wish to lift someone's spirits, or a feeling that has waited long enough to be expressed. For Christopher Benson, who makes music as ChrisB, those impulses help explain The Right Time, Money's Calling You and Diamond in the Rough. Benson says he wrote, produced and recorded all three himself. His accounts of their beginnings, together with the lyrics to all three songs, offer a portrait of an artist learning how to give personal intention a finished musical form.
Benson has described a path that began with making beats on his phone and developed into songwriting, alongside an interest in combining house and rap. He has also described inspiration and enlightenment as aims for his music. The stories behind these three songs bring those broad ambitions closer to everyday experience: recognizing progress, responding to someone he loves, and finding words for difficult material.
The Right Time and a breakthrough in the process
According to Benson, The Right Time grew out of reaching a particular threshold as a producer. He had finally made a track he considered good enough for someone to perform on musically. That confidence in what he had built helped fuel the lyrics.
The line “And it ain’t about no fame that’s so lame, therapy you find when you on your game.” gives that breakthrough an emotional purpose. In the lyric, the reward of being on one's game is the relief or satisfaction it can provide. Read alongside Benson's account, the passage connects growing technical confidence with feeling better through the act of making music.
Much of the writing imagines music through its physical effects. Beats slap against a window, people jump with hands and feet up, and the repeated refrain keeps reaching for the right time and the right vibe tonight. The phrase “wishing all the haters prayers” offers an unexpected response to hostility within those scenes of movement and release: the narrator answers it with a blessing.
The NYC passage adds a dreamlike cluster of images: beams, trustfalls, lovers and the color green. Its reference to ancestors leads into “a mighty God is all we need”, bringing faith into this picture of possibility. The closing lines turn toward bodily sensation and flirtation, with the narrator's confidence feeding an invitation to move together.
The words give the pleasure of creating a social dimension. Benson's account of learning to build a performance-ready track helps explain the confidence behind that invitation.
Money's Calling You and a song for his husband
Money's Calling You began with a specific person in mind: Benson's husband. Benson says he wanted to inspire him and make him happy after another ballad had left them both feeling sad. That earlier song addressed positivity, romance, love and longevity, yet its emotional effect was strong enough to make his husband want to cry.
His explanation also includes a defiant edge. Benson describes brushing off haters, giving them the middle finger and collecting the money earned through daily work. Encouragement has a practical object in that account: valuing one's effort and refusing to let other people's hostility overshadow it. The wish to make his husband happy sits alongside a message about standing up for the value of one's labor.
The lyrics carry that intention into a voice occupied with planning, confidence and reward. The repeated address to “you” turns the refrain outward, urging its addressee to claim the bag and keep moving despite detractors. Its repetition keeps returning to the same invitation, with “Baby” adding familiarity to the challenge.
The verses connect making songs with making a living through kitchen and bread imagery. Cooking becomes a way to picture creative productivity; eating bread suggests enjoying its rewards. Other lines imagine goals being reached and hostile onlookers left behind. The language is exuberant, but it also includes a clear instruction to protect one's integrity: “Don’t sell your soul build it up to a high”. That line gives the pursuit of money an accompanying concern for dignity and self-worth.
The ending places the next decision with the person being addressed: “It’s your call now what you gone do now”. Set beside Benson's explanation, the question feels like the destination of the encouragement. Affection, pride in work and defiance build toward an invitation to act.
Diamond in the Rough and the urgency of being heard
Asked what inspired Diamond in the Rough, Benson answered, “It’s in the lyrics.” The words make a strong case for beginning there. Their opening declaration, “I got alot to say so I couldn't wait,” establishes a voice ready to move beyond holding back. The diamond image places the promise of becoming alongside the experience of being judged. The narrator's belief in a future has to coexist with other people's stares and hostility.
The refrain then turns toward closeness. Dancing from night into day gives its declaration a shared setting, while “Put your hands on my heart feel it escalate” brings another person directly into the moment. The question “Why you hesitate?” leaves an invitation hanging. Read together, these lines connect the desire to speak with the desire to be felt and understood.
The verses complicate that opening confidence. Promises of companionship sit beside self-doubt, prayer and concern for family. Later, a first-person account describes waking to screams, heat and smoke, trying to find a way through a blaze, and a father fighting a fire associated in the lyrics with the loss of two brothers. The verse also names Little Rock, Arkansas. These details belong to the song's narrative; Benson's invitation to read the lyrics is the basis for discussing them here.
The passage uses concrete images to convey emergency: a bedroom, a window, flames at a door and a call to 911. Its frustration over the wait for help makes time feel consequential in a different way from the opening's impatience to speak. The line about a chance at breath brings the language down to the most immediate need. Prayer and gratitude frame the verse, giving the narrator a way to address what has happened and the possibility of continuing.
When the refrain returns after that account, its confidence carries the weight of what the narrative has disclosed. The line “When I was down you held me up, now look we elevate” gives that becoming a shared foundation: another person's support has helped the narrator rise. The closing passages ask for moments to linger and for that person's energy to stay nearby. The road remains wild in the final lines. Companionship gives the ending a sense of openness, leaving space for the narrator to keep moving and to say more.
Making room for the next song
Taken together, Benson's explanations and the accompanying lyrics show several points at which a song can take shape. A gain in production skill can unlock the words. A husband's emotional response can suggest another song's purpose. A refrain about becoming can hold a difficult story within it.
ChrisB's role across writing, production and recording gives him a direct hand in developing those intentions. The personal through line is the value he places on expression reaching someone: a performance made possible by a track, encouragement offered to his husband, and a lyrical voice asking another person to come closer.

Can you see what I can see, looks too easy, flows, beats, and heat.
And it ain’t about no fame that’s so lame, therapy you find when you on your game.
Feel this ample life bigger, if it’s not fast enough maybe I could spit it quicker.

Cuz You shining like glitter, and you only get thicker if my beats get sicker
(Feel it dripping off your body)
(Let’em know)
Yeah, I’m a real game switcher, turning tables with my name make’em perk make’em jiggle

Money's Calling You
I bet you I can tell you what I’m gonna do
Let my beat drop money calling, for me
I know I’m a beast money calling on me
And you can probably catch me in a dope zen
Focused in making plans with my money on my mind
I could never see it end
(Hear the money calling, hear the money calling, hear the money calling,
hear the money)
That moneys calling you
That money talks for you
Pick up your bag fuck all them too
Baby it’s calling you
Baby it’s calling you
That moneys calling you
That money talks for you
Pick up your bag fuck all them too
Baby it’s calling you
Baby it’s calling you
Pop hit’em back even in the worst way
I’m getting money in my sleep it’s a thirst day
Haters mad busting bands what can they say
You feel the energy shifting when the lights great
I’m making songs in the kitchen like some hot cakes
Now let me cook and eat bread in the same day
Would tell my younger self you’ll work for the Army
(Center of Jets Stadium, working new ways)
That moneys calling you
That money talks for you
Pick up your bag fuck all them too
Baby it’s calling you
Baby it’s calling you
Ha, oh they mad? They couldn’t see what was coming Now they big sad? Feeling left behind you shooting way too fast, across the sky, make a wish,
Go get your new bag. It’s a crime if it’s no
Fucks to grab, all night you might’ve caught him
In a jet lag (jet lag) all the streaming
And the screaming, ChrisB on the beat, keep the meaning.
Sun is bright feeling nice bag is tight
Couldn’t fear a single soul even if I tried
Don’t sell your soul build it up to a high
Touch your goals win the fight a gritty one
But it’s right.
That moneys calling you
That money talks for you
Pick up your bag fuck all them too
Baby it’s calling you
Baby it’s calling you
Sun is bright feeling nice bag is tight
Couldn’t fear a single soul even if I tried
Don’t sell your soul build it up to a high
Touch your goals win the fight a gritty one
But it’s right.
It’s your call now what you gone do now x4
Diamond in the Rough
(3x) I got alot to say so I couldn't wait
I been holding back but I'm here today
Like a diamond in the rough I'll be something great
Had to learn how to move when they stare and hate
I got alot to say so I couldn't wait
We can dance from the night till it change to day
Put your hands on my heart feel it escalate
Why you hesitate?
I said the road is wild, how can I make you smile
To you I can vow, take you the long mile
Why can't I make you smile, was in your head just now
To stop I can't now, just kilted the self-doubt.
I'm not talking bout that shit that ya might like
I got flows coming in off of top flights
They can't see that
Where my minds eye see through the creeps at
It's a sin just to walk out everyday
I pray to the lord please keep my family safe
Yeah, you can believe that, he got us through a blaze
A second chance to say
(2x) I got alot to say so I couldn't wait
I been holding back but I'm here today
Like a diamond in the rough I'll be something great
Had to learn how to move when they stare and hate
I got alot to say so I couldn't wait
We can dance from the night till it change to day
Put your hands on my heart feel it escalate
Why you hesitate?
Middle of the night, I was woken out my sleep
Air filled up with screams it was like a dream
Felt the heat on my face, smoke filled up the place
In my head, in my bed, I'm like no way
I didn't have the time to contemplate
I had to find my way through a blaze
Blessings up to my dad that fought off a fire that took my two bro's away
They were two, three, four, he said a skate through the window
Fighting flames licking through the door
Had to call 911 like 15 minutes, fuck is y'all waiting for
It's a shame all the hell that you got to raise
For a chance of breath, a life, what a price to pay,
Little Rock, Arkansas where I was born and raise
The roads wild, thanks to God because he makes a way.
(2x) Shedding love every day, keep me settle keep me straight
Every moment with you, we gotta let marinate
When I was down you held me up, now look we elevate
I got way more to say just got to let you calculate.
(4x) The road is wild, and I'm so free
Your Energy I want you next to me
