Talking Heads Open the Fear of Music Archive for a November Reissue
A November 13 expanded edition and an October radio takeover bring the band’s restless 1979 world into focus.
Talking Heads Radio is on air this October, giving listeners a limited window to revisit the band’s catalog before an expanded Fear of Music arrives November 13. The SiriusXM channel runs through October 22 in cars and October 31 on the app.
For anyone drawn to the space where music, image and personality meet, this is an opportunity to explore a band through its working materials. A finished album can feel inevitable after decades of listening. Alternate takes and performances invite a different kind of attention: to decisions, experiments and the ways a song changes when it leaves the recording room.
Archival performance: Talking Heads, “Life During Wartime,” Old Grey Whistle Test, 1979. Official band video linked by Rhino for the forthcoming reissue.
What the expanded edition includes
According to Rhino’s announcement, the three-CD/Blu-ray package combines a remastered album with rarities and two complete 1979 concerts. The shows were recorded at Boston’s Berklee Performance Center on August 24 and the Capitol Theatre in New Jersey on November 17. The Blu-ray adds Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround and high-resolution stereo mixes, plus Old Grey Whistle Test footage.
There are vinyl alternatives, too. The official Talking Heads store lists a six-LP edition shipping November 13, pairing the original record with studio outtakes, alternate versions and the two concerts. Its description places the album between the angular approach of the group’s earlier work and the funk-oriented direction that followed.
The interesting question is how those materials sit beside one another. Hearing a studio version and a concert performance in sequence can shift the focus from a familiar hook to the interaction among players. That comparison gives an archival release a purpose beyond accumulating extra tracks. It allows listeners to follow an arrangement as something flexible and physical.
The conversation continues on radio
There is also something to hear before November. SiriusXM’s official guide says Talking Heads Radio runs on channel 145 in cars through October 22 and on its app through October 31. The programming brings together the group’s catalog, stories and guest selections.
The channel launch included a September 28 conversation at SiriusXM’s New York studios with David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison and Tina Weymouth. Este Haim hosted the audience Q&A, which was scheduled to premiere October 1 and then become available through the app. SiriusXM also identifies guest DJs including Tunde Adebimpe, The Linda Lindas, Adam Clayton and Trey Anastasio.
That range creates a second route into the catalog. A guest selection can reveal which detail another musician notices first, while an interview can put different recollections of the same creative period alongside one another. For listeners approaching the band for the first time, those voices offer a useful starting point without prescribing a single definitive interpretation.
Start with the performance
An official archival video offers the most immediate introduction. Rhino’s media page links to the band’s 1979 Old Grey Whistle Test performance of “Life During Wartime”, released as part of this campaign.
The practical distinction is simple: the expanded physical release is still forthcoming, while the radio programming and linked performance are available to explore now. There is no need to treat a preorder announcement as a review of audio that has not been assessed here.
Instead, October offers time to revisit the original record and decide which part of the archive holds the strongest pull: the studio experiments, the concert documents or the band’s own recollections. Taken together, these openings make the catalog feel like a conversation that listeners can enter at several different points.

A song can begin with a technical breakthrough, a wish to lift someone's spirits, or a feeling that has waited long enough to be expressed. For Christopher Benson, who makes music as ChrisB, those impulses help explain The Right Time, Money's Calling You and Diamond in the Rough. Benson says he wrote, produced and recorded all three himself. His accounts of their beginnings, together with the lyrics to all three songs, offer a portrait of an artist learning how to give personal intention a finished musical form.

This, she claims, is evidence of the cycles that recur throughout our lives and the truth that, despite the fact that we evolve and our viewpoints shift, "who we are at a core stays the same."
