She was apparently ‘undoubtedly’ one of the finest of any artist at this moment, if not the best this year, Punch remarked. "I fail to see why she wouldn't receive an artist of the year nomination. Simply put, it made no sense to me. It shows disdain.

Punch said he personally approached MTV over SZA's rejection but never got a response. He stated MTV executives were unwilling to discuss the situation.

Since there were individuals discussing show logistics on the line who had nothing to do with the nominations, they ultimately decided to hold another call, he said.

"They didn't want to talk about artist of the year when we tried to set up the second call, which to me was really a slap in the face," As a result of the rebuff, Punch dropped SZA from the 2023 MTV VMAs performance plans. Punch accepted full responsibility for her absence in case MTV retaliated against her. He told The Hollywood Reporter, "I figured, why go perform and do this if she's not going to be respected to the highest level?" Therefore, I made the decision to cancel the performance.” The 2023 MTV VMAs was place in New Jersey on Tuesday, September 12, and SZA was not there.

She collected the accolade for Best R&B Video at this VMA’s event.
